Healing with Colours
Healing with Colours part 1
The Sunnah in Islam is White, Green, Black and Red and if you combine these colours you get the sufi colour of brown which came from Shaykh Abdal Qadir Jilani. Also its known to have strips on ones clothes which also sunnah.
The great master of Medicine Ibn Sina or Latinized name to Avicenna (980-1037), seeing colour as of vital importance both in diagnosis and in treatment, discussed chromotherapy in The Canon of Medicine. He wrote that "colour is an observable symptom of disease" and also developed a chart that related colour to the temperature and physical condition of the body. His view was that red moved the blood, blue or white cooled it, and yellow reduced muscular pain and inflammation. and so it seems clear that light is the most important environmental input, after food, in controlling bodily function.
While most of us dont realise that colour affects us every day of our lives and can influence our mood and our thoughts. Colours affects people in many ways, depending upon one’s age, gender, ethnic background or local climate. Certain colours or groups of colours tend to get a similar reaction from most people, the overall difference being in the shade or tones used.

Colours are known to have an effect on people with brain disorders or people with emotional troubles. For example, some one who gets over-excited would benefit from the colour blue can have a calming effect which can then result in lower blood pressure, blue is to swell the ratio of female chinchilla babies to males. whereas the colour red might have the opposite effect, so if your exhausted you may want to use colour red good for energy and helps againest fatigue. Green is another colour that may be used to relax people who are emotionally unbalanced. Yellow and Gold, on the other hand, may be used to help invigorate people who might be suffering from depression. Ultraviolet or purple is used to increasechildrens or adults intellect.
Colour is light, and light is energy
Light is colour and colours are wavelengths of energy. Light bypasses our logical mind, it’s these wavelengths of colour is the universal language for the software of our brains, which translates energy to our cells. And colour like light stimulates our endocrine system which is connected to our body's energy centres-(chakra term used in west in yoga in buddhism or Lataif term used in Islamic Sufism about the Bodies colours) All organs, body systems, and functions are connected to these energy centres. we can strengthen our centres through the conscious use colour through food, decorating rooms, wearing clothing-(the colours we choose to wear in essence symbolizes how we feel about ourselves or the persona we want to achieve) and essentails oils.
We receive light and colour information through our eyes, which then stimulates the retina and its cells, rods and cones. These impulses, which travel through the optic nerve to thevisual cortex of the brain via the pituitary, trigger other glands and their hormone secretion to various parts of the body. Many body functions are stimulated or retarded by light and the different colours of light and thus affect our energy centres.
Endocrine system secretes hormones which are key in regulating our body’s processes, they control many basic body functions and emotional responses, such as aggression. Using light to stimulate and regulate hormones in this way has far-reaching benefits such as depression, seasonal affected disorder (SAD), correcting hormonal imbalances, and sleep disorders.
The way it works
Colour therapy and healing (also known as chromotherapy or light therapy) is a type of holistic healing that uses the visible spectrum of light and colour to affect a person’s mood and physical or mental health. Each colour falls into a specific frequency and vibration, which many believe contribute to specific properties that can be used to affect the energy and frequencies within our bodies.
The seven colours of the spectrum relate to the seven main energy centres of the body. Depending on your mood and physical health, a colour therapist will use specific colours to treat the afflicted parts of your body. Colour therapy is administered in several ways. In many treatments coloured lights are shone on the body or coloured silks are worn. Other practitioners use different coloured liquids in bottles or small torches with coloured beams that are pointed at the relevant acupressure (also known as colourpuncture) points.

And so it uses light in the form of colour to balance "energy" lacking from a person's body, whether it be on physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental levels. There are many different ways of giving colour, including; Solarized Water, Light boxes/lamps with colour filters, colour silks and hands on healing using colour.Colour is absorbed by the eyes, skin, skull our ‘magnetic energy field’ or aura and the energy of colour affects us on all levels, that is to say, physical, spiritual and emotional. Every cell in the body needs light energy - thus colour energy has widespread effects on the whole body.
Colour Has a powerful effect on behaviour
Research has demonstrated in many cases that the mood-altering effects of colour may only be temporary. A blue room may initially cause feelings of calm, but the effect dissipates after a short period of time. As designers and interior decorators have discovered, colour sets a mood; this in turn, affects health because as many as half of modern man's diseases may have a psychosomatic component.
'warm' and 'cool' colours
Keep in mind that each colour has a psychological value and that colours behave in three basic ways: active, passive, and neutral. for in house rooms and generally. Light colours are expansive and airy, making rooms seem larger and brighter. Dark colours are sophisticated and warm.
The distinction between 'warm' and 'cool', colours are related to the observed between the "warm" colours associated with daylight or sunset the colours of red, orange, and yellow, browns and tansare considered warm colours because they are the colours of fire. These hues are also said to advance, meaning they appear to come forward, making a wall feel closer.
Cool colours will normally make you think of cool and serene things, such as winter skies and still ponds and cold colours are related to landscape light and the day. cool colours are often said to be the hues from blue green through blue violet, most grays included.
Some test and research
When research was done on children under detention in a probation Department in California who became violent, they are put in an 8-foot by 4-foot cell with one distinctive feature - it is bubble gum pink. The children tend to relax, stop yelling and banging and often fall asleep within 10 minutes.
May that is why as babies we first experience colour in the womb where we are enveloped in a nurturing and comforting pink. Then as a child we associate with colour as part of our first learning processes. These first associations contribute to our consciousness. As we get older we attach many different feelings, memories and meanings to certain colours and this can then become a feature in our subconscious.
Hospitals and correctional institutions across America have become sufficiently convinced of the pacifying effect of bubble gum pink to colour at least one room that shade. Passive pink, as it is also called, is perhaps the most dramatic example, and certainly the most controversial, of many attempts to use light and colour to affect health and behavior.
Red to increase appetite and table turnover in restaurants and this why many restaurants use red to stimulate appetite Mcdonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, ultraviolet to reduce cavities and spur children's I.Q.'s, and blue to swell the ratio of female chinchilla babies to males. ******
Being now in enclosed areas under artificial lights, any effect of colour and light becomes important. And now that man is primed to build artificial habitats under the seas or in outer space, totally isolated from sunlight or totally exposed to it, the urgency of understanding the effect of artificial light can only become critical.
As a result the ancient and once discredited field of chromotherapy has been rejuvenated. Many scientists have become convinced that light has a far greater impact on health and behavior than previously thought. Several experiments have shown that different colours affect blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates as well as brain activity and biorhythms. As a result, colours are now used in the treatment of a variety of diseases.
London's Blackfriars bridge was repainted blue in an attempt to reduce the number of people who commit suicide by jumping from it. In the United States, ultraviolet has become a standard treatment for psoriasis. And white fluorescent light, in conjunction with photosensitizing drugs, is widely used to help heal herpes sores. More controversially, several municipalities are experimenting with passive pink to stop graffiti.
One study found that warm-coloured placebo pills were reported as more effective than cool-coloured placebo pills. Researchers have learned that yellow placebo pills are the most effective at treating depression while red pills cause the patient to be more alert and awake. Green pills help ease anxiety while white pills soothe stomach issues such as ulcers.

Anecdotal evidence has suggested that installing blue-coloured streetlights can lead to a reduction of crime in those areas. The temperature of the environment might play a role in colour preference.
People who are warm tend to list cool colours as their favorites, while people who are cold prefer warmer colours.
Studies have also shown that certain colours can have an impact on performance.
Exposing students to the colour red prior to an exam has been shown to have a negative impact on test performance.
More recently, researchers discovered that the colour red causes people to react with greater speed and force, something that might prove useful during athletic activities.
One study that looked at historical data found that sports teams dressed in mostly black uniforms are more likely to receive penalties and that students were more likely to associate negative qualities with a player wearing a black uniform.
In the study, the walls of the schoolroom were changed from orange and white to royal and light blue. A gray carpet was installed in place of an orange rug. Finally, the fluorescent lights and diffuser panels were replaced with full-spectrum lighting.
As a result, the children's mean systolic blood pressure dropped from 120 to 100, or nearly 17 percent, The children were also better behaved and more attentive and less fidgety and aggressive. When the room was returned to its original design, however, the children once again became rowdy and loud.
The Colours and there effects in the house
RED
Red raises a room’s energy level. It is a good choice when you want to stir up excitement, particularly at night. In the living room or dining room, red draws people together and stimulates conversation. In an entryway, it creates a strong first impression. Red has been shown to raise blood pressure, speed respiration and heart rate. It is usually considered too stimulating for bedrooms.
Red is the most eye-catching and exciting colour in the entire spectrum. It’s eye-catching, exciting, and demands attention. But did you know that the colour red actually increases your heart rate? It is perfect for accent colours, calls to action, or anywhere you want to draw people’s attention. Be careful though, because overuse of this colour can cause a negative emotional response.
Red is used to increase appetite and table turnover in restaurants and this why many restaurants use red to stimulate appetite as they theme just look at Mcdonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut.
YELLOW
Yellow captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness. It is perfect for kitchens, dining rooms, and bathrooms, where happy colours are energizing and uplifting. In halls, entries, and small spaces, yellow can feel expansive and welcoming. Even though yellow although is a cheery colour, it is not a good choice to use in main colour schemes when it comes to designing a room. Studies show that people are more likely to lose their temper in a yellow interior.
Babies also seem to cry more in a yellow room In large amounts, this colour tends to create feelings of frustration and anger in people. In chromotherapy, yellow is believed to stimulate the nerves and purify the body.
This is the official colour of optimism and happiness. Maybe that’s why smiley faces are always this colour. Studies have shown that the colour yellow actually causes the release of serotonin in the brain, which is a chemical that positively stimulates your brain. Basically, it produces “happy” chemicals! This colour is also best used in small amounts. Too much yellow can be overpowering and shouldn’t be used as a dominant colour in a scheme.
BLUE
Blue is said to bring down blood pressure and slow respiration and heart rate. That is why it is considered calming, relaxing and serene, and it is often recommended for bedrooms and bathrooms. Be careful, however: a pastel blue that looks pretty on the paint chip can come across as unpleasantly chilly when it is on the walls and furnishings, especially in a room that receives little natural light. If you opt for a light blue as the primary colour in a room, balance it with warm hues for the furnishings and fabrics.
To encourage relaxation in the social areas (family rooms, living rooms, large kitchens) consider warmer blues, such as periwinkle, or bright blues, such as cerulean or turquoise. Blue is known to have a calming effect when used as the main colour of a room. Go for softer shades of blue. Dark blue has the opposite effect, evoking feelings of sadness. So refrain from using darker blues in your main colour scheme. Stay with the lighter shades of blue to give you and your loved ones a calm effect.
The colour of trust and loyalty. Blue is associated with calmness and security. Most people would say that blue is their favorite colour. It has been documented to lower heart-rate, foster relaxation, and increase productivity. Maybe this has something to do with why a billion people trust Facebook with all their most valuable information? Just a thought. And is often used in coporate business because as mentioned it increase productivity as its not invasive, just look as Mircosoft Windows software and software devices they are mainly blue. This is a very safe colour to incorporate into design. Since it’s most people’s favorite colour, you’ll immediately appeal to a wider audience.
GREEN
Green is considered the most restful colour for the eye. Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow, green is suited for almost any room on the house. In the kitchen, green cools things down; in a family room or living room, it encourages unwinding but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness. Green also has a calming effect when used as a main colour for decorating. It is believed to relieve stress by helping people relax. Also believed to help with fertility, making it a great choice for the bedroom.
This is the easiest colour for the human eye to process. It’s easy to look at and is associated with growth, nature, and money. It can also be a very relaxing colour for some, which is why you’ll see it used in a lot of leisure and “zen-like” design. If your goal is to communicate growth this is the colour you want to use.
PURPLE
Purple in its darkest values (eggplant, for example) is rich, dramatic, and sophisticated. It is associated with luxury as well as creativity, and as an accent or secondary colour, it gives a scheme depth. Lighter versions of purple, such as lavender and lilac, bring the same restful quality to bedrooms as blue does, but without the risk of feeling chilly.
A colour that has traditionally been associated with royalty, prosperity, wealth, success, wisdom many kings wore robes. Studies have shown that the colour purple actually stimulates problem solving in the human brain this wisdom. That’s interesting. Caution though, studies have also shown that overuse of this colour can give people the impression of falsehood, or being fake. Use this colour as an accent, and sparingly.
ORANGE
Orange evokes excitement, enthusiasm and is an energetic colour. While not a good idea a living room or for bedrooms, this colour is great for an exercise room. It will bring out all the emotions that you need released during your fitness routine. In ancient cultures orange was believed to heal the lungs and increase energy levels.
Orange is also an attention getter. Distinct from red, orange is a colour that is mostly associated with fun, ambition, and youthfulness which is what the airline company Easyjet is all about. It is also a great colour to use for accents and calls to action. Unlike red, it is not as easily overused.
Neutrals (black, gray, white, and brown)
Neutrals (black, gray, white, and brown) are basic to the decorator’s tool kit. All-neutral schemes fall in and out of fashion, but their virtue lies in their flexibility: Add colour to liven things up; subtract it to calm things down. Black is best used in small doses as an accent.
Indeed, some experts maintain that every room needs a touch of black to ground the colour scheme and give it depth. To make the job easier, you can rely on the interior designer’s most important colour tool: the colour wheel.
Crimson can make some people feel irritable. Invoking feels of rage and hostility, this is a colour that should be avoided as the main colour of a room. Sitting for long periods of time in a room painted in this colour will likely affect the peace and harmony you are striving to create in your home.
GREY
A solid, timeless colour that communicates strength, sturdiness, and longevity. Likely because things that are grey have these same attributes: steel, concrete, stone, Apple products, etc.. You can never go wrong when incorporating this colour into your design project. It can be a great alternative to white, and give things a modern, yet timeless, look.
BROWN
brown-communicates earthy and organic is what best describes this colour. Dirt, trees, potatoes– all things found in the earth. It’s also the colour of my favorite beverage– coffee! When used properly, it can be a soothing element and give an organic feel to your design.
WHITE
white-communicates the lightest colour both visually and in psychological weight. It gives a light feel to your design, and is best used to give your design breathing room. Associated with purity, cleanliness and clarity I think white is a great colour to incorporate into any design.
BLACK
Black-communicates the colour of elegance, power, and authority; boldly stated and seemingly unshakeable. If you’re trying to communicate strength be sure to incorporate black into your design.
