Psychological Trauma -The five Fs, Fight, flight, freeze, friend and flop

Psychological Trauma – What Every Trauma Worker Should Know
The five Fs  - Fight, flight, freeze, friend and flop in Trauma

What is Trauma.?
Trauma is simply trapped emotional energy from one's past such as ones childhood or even a few months ago it gets stored in the body and thus becames trapped emotions. Normally in a traumatic event, a huge amount of energy is made available in our bodies so that we can deal with that event.

These energies take up space and distort the vibration where they are trapped, eventually leading to not only a disruption in the organs and tissue in that area, but globally in the whole body and often we become overwhelmed – shocked – and the energy that should be there to help us becomes frozen and stuck. Having ‘nowhere to go’, this trapped energy results in symptoms such as:exaggerated emotional reactions, and extreme mood-swings,Sleeping poorly, Panic attacks, Flashbacks and nightmares, Numbness and lack of feeling,Unexplained medical disorders,Muscle tightness and pain, Headaches, Chronic fatigue,Psychosomatic illnesses Skin problems, Digestive problems.. etc.

They can block people from finding love and happiness and make them feel disconnected or lonely.  trapped emotions is energy, just like the rest of the body, and they can affect physical tissues.  Trapped emotions can create pain, malfunction and eventual disease as mentioned above already.

Trapped energy vibrate at different frequencies depending on the particular emotion. The trapped emotion or negative vibration can often affect the part of the body where they are stuck, but can also disturb overall balance and health. Releasing trapped emotions balance the body so it can regain its full healing capabilities.

Resolving trauma symptoms

The symptoms are often difficult to explain in ordinary medical terms, and can seem resistant to treatment. Sometimes a symptom will resolve after some kind of treatment, only to be mysteriously replaced with another symptom somewhere else in the body. This is because the energy hasn’t been set free from the body.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (S.E)
is a body-based treatment used for releasing and healing trauma, shock and stress. It was pioneered by American psychologist, Peter Levine.

Trauma expert Peter A. Levine -Author of (Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma) studied wild animals, observing that even though their lives are routinely threatened, they don’t suffer with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They are able to release all the ‘fight and flight’ survival energy from their bodies, naturally and simply, when the threat is over.

They then go on with their lives as if nothing has happened. Although human beings have a similar nervous system to wild animals, we do not easily discharge this energy from our bodies.

the  Sufi Hadra are a form of Resonance or Vibrational Healing for the Soul. Hakim Archuletta mentions using the  Hadra as a somatic experience that heals trauma.

The hadra cures and 'heals traumatic states' that the modern world and its people have given our poor souls as Sidi Hakim Archuletta-(who has worked within the healing arts profession for over 30 years). talks about using the hadra as a cure.

We are all traumatized in some degree or another and are victims of violence, abuse; physical or verbal and so need a 'sufic somatic experience' to help. Soma refers to the body and somatic refers to the body experienced 'from the inside' and includes thoughts, emotions, and sensations, its about being 'in the moment' and by focusing on sensations, tensions, finding relaxation, using breath, movement, inner wisdom can come to the surface.(all this and more is experienced in the Hadra).  see article

what happens to the human brain and nervous system at the point of trauma.

A traumatic incident is one in which a person experiences, witnesses or, in certain circumstances, hears about a (real or perceived) threat to the physical and/or psychological integrity of self, or others, whereby the person’s response involves great fear, horror and/or helplessness (APA, 2000; Rothschild, 2000).  Exposure of a child to the sexualized behaviour of adults or older children, regardless of whether the child responds with great fear, horror and/or helplessness, also constitutes a traumatic incident, due to the developmentally inappropriate nature of the sexualized behaviour(s) (APA, 2000), and the child’s inability to give informed consent.

People who hear about traumatic incidents (psychotherapists for example); and trans-generational trauma is a term sometimes used to describe the traumatic symptomatology displayed by the descendants of trauma survivors. Following exposure to traumatic stimuli some people become traumatized.

The significance of the amygdala

“The amygdala is the key component in neural networks involved with fear, attachment, earlymemory, and emotional experience throughout life” (Cozolino, 2002: 71). The human brain is wired up in such a way that survival is given precedence. The amygdala’s role in survival is paramount.

Every piece of sensory input that enters our brain is routed via the thalamus (in the reptilian brain) and then to the amygdala (in the limbic brain) (Cozolino, 2002; van der Kolk, 1996a).  The neural pathway from the thalamus to the amygdala is fast- and necessarily so (LeDoux, 1996).  The amygdala filters the information searching out threat.  If any threat is recognised, whether real or perceived, the hypothalamus is immediately stimulated to respond.  It does so by triggering the release of stress hormones to prepare the body to defend itself (Cozolino, 2002), and by alerting the sympathetic branch of the ANS to become highly aroused in readiness to meet the threat (Ogden & Minton, 2000; Rothschild, 2000; Siegel, 1999).

The human system broadly responds in one (or more) of five predictable ways when threatened.  ‘Fight, flight and freeze’ are well documented responses to threat (Levine, 1997); to these can be added ‘friend’ and ‘flop’ (Ogden and Minton, 2000; Porges, 1995 & 2004).  The five Fs, are instigated by the amygdala upon detection of threat.  The amygdala responds to the threat in the way it perceives will most likely lead to survival.

1. Friend is the earliest defensive strategy available to us.  At birth the human infant’s amygdala is operational (Cozolino, 2002), and they utilize their cry in order to bring a caregiver to them.  The non-mobile baby has to rely upon calling a protector to its aid, in the same way that the terrified adult screams in the hope that rescue will come.

2 .Fight, as a survival strategy, is fairly self explanatory.  The threatened individual may respond with overt aggression or more subtle ‘fight behaviours’, for example saying “no”.

3. Flight is any means the individual uses to put space between themselves and the threat.  It may involve sprinting away from the perceived danger, but is more likely exhibited as backing away or, particularly in children, as hiding.

4. Freeze: When the amygdala deems that friend, fight or flight are not likely to be successful it will elicit a freeze response.  Levine points out that immobility has several advantages to mammals when threatened by a predator, namely: that the predator has less chance of detecting immobile prey; that many predatory animals will not eat meat that they consider to be dead; and that if the predator does kill, the freeze mechanism provides a natural analgesic (Levine, 1997).

Between mammals of the same species the freeze response indicates submission, with the victorious animal recognising their dominance and leaving the subordinate animal alone.  In the majority of inter-personal threats between humans however, the advent of one party freezing is often either ignored or taken as consent to the assault (whether verbal, physical or sexual).

Flop occurs if, and when, the freeze mechanism fails.  The moment the threat increases, despite freeze having intended to put an end to the situation, the amygdala will trigger the ANS to swing from predominantly sympathetic activation to parasympathetic activation (Rothschild, 2000).  The body will shift from a position of catatonic musculature tension (as is observed in ‘freeze’) to a ‘floppy’ state, whereby muscle tension is lost and both body and mind become malleable (hippocampal and cortical functioning will very likely be severely impaired at this point).

The survival purpose of the flop state is evident: if ‘impact’ is going to occur the likelihood of surviving it will be increased if the body yields, and psychologically, in the short-term at least, the situation will be more bearable if the higher brain functions are ‘offline’.  People who have elicited flop as a survival mechanism are very submissive and will make little or no outward protest concerning what is happening to them.  They will bend to the will of the person perceived as threatening in an attempt to stay alive.

Different survival strategies are ideally suited to certain threatening situations; for example, flight would be well employed upon hearing a fire alarm, yet to flee from a hungry tiger is inadvisable.  The reflexive response of the amygdala is informed by the genetically encoded information, shared by all humans, regarding the nature of certain threats (Levine, 1997), and the individual’s subjective experience that has resulted in the pairing of a fear response with certain stimuli (Cozolino, 2002).

Because the purpose of the five Fs is survival, success will be gauged in survival terms; “success doesn’t mean winning, it means surviving, and it doesn’t really matter how you get there.  The object is to stay alive until the danger is past.” (Levine, 1997:96).  Successfully used strategies will be reinforced and strategies employed but unsuccessful, will be less likely to be used in future.

A person who is successful in actively defending against a threat (i.e. utilizes friend, fight or flight) is less likely to become traumatized than someone who uses passive defences (freeze or flop) (Herman, 1992; van der Kolk 1996).  If active defences are weakened, by lack of success, and/or passive defences  strengthened through successful utilization, the likelihood of a person becoming traumatized and/or a repeat victim of trauma are increased......full article click below

17 benefits of tribulations (incl, notes and Vid) – by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

Contains the 17 benefits of tribulations also the notes and the full lecture CD of
17 benefits of tribulations and some extra notes about tribulations.

“17 Benefits of Tribulation” is a remarkable talk given by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf many years ago, based on the treatise of the seventh century scholar Al-`Izz Ibn `Abdus-Salam – Sultan of the `Ulama’ (may Allah be pleased with him).

This must be one of the talks I actually listen to quite often, especially when I’m feeling down. All of Shaykh Hamza’s talks leave a strong impact on one’s heart; however after listening to this specific talk, it leaves the person with a deeper sense of inspiration and himmah to snap out of the “feeling low” state and to invigorate the high aspirations one has set themselves.

One of the profound analogies Shaykh Hamza makes in the talk, and which I love is:

we/you are all in the ocean of this duniya; if you panic or have anxiety about things or situations, you will drown. Just RELAX, and you will float because you are in good hands!…. [Paraphrased]

Shaykh Hamza focuses on the hardships the Prophet sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasalam went through but never allowed any of those afflictions to perturb him. After listening to this lecture, I can say for sure that one will have a different attitude and outlook on calamities and hardships; and it will heal the broken or agitated heart no doubt.

The 17 Benefits of Tribulation are listed below

  1. You realize the power of Lordship over you.
  1. You realize your object servanthood and your complete state of resignation and brokenness before the will and power of God.
  1. Sincerity to God; one has no place of return in putting off or defending against the calamity except to Him.  It makes you sincere because the muhsin is the one who call on God without any shirk. A moment of ikhlas in this world is enough to save a person.
  1. He returns to God and suddenly is fervent in his desire of his Lord.
  1. It leads to a humbled state before God and it leads to prayers (du’a) that you call on God.
  1. You’re forbearing towards the One who has afflicted you.
  1. You forgive the one who has wronged you.
  1. To be patient during the tribulation.
  1. To be happy about what’s happening because of those benefits.
  1. To be grateful for it.
  1. Purification that these calamities have towards peoples’ wrongs and sins.
  1. Compassion that God enables you to show to people who are in tribulation and to help them.
  1. Tribulation gives you the blessing of having true knowledge of the extent of well-being.
  1. God has prepared rewards for the calamities that you’ve beared patiently or with contentment.
  1. What is hidden inside the folds of these calamities are blessings.
  1. Tribulations prevent you from arrogance.
  1. Contentment.  Tribulation afflicts the good and the evil (people), whoever doesn’t like it, it’s on Him, he’s lost the dunya and the akhira.  Those who are pleased with it, it’s because he knows it, because paradise is better than anything in this world and if these tribulations are what it takes for him to get to paradise, then he’s content with it.

Transcript for 17 Benefits of Tribulation Transcript Text of CD

The Seventeen Benefits of Tribulation
  • Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon) never let tribulations get to him.
  • When Abu Bakr (RA) and the Prophet (peace be upon) were in the cave, Abu Bakr was worried while the Prophet (saw) remained unperturbed.
  • In battles, people used to stand behind the Prophet (peace be upon)
  • If you are easily perturbed, you are disconnected from Allah
  • Being easily perturbed=weak iman (uh-oh)
  • Ex: people can’t listen to each other because they are easily perturbed.
  • Words can illicit perturbed responses, so words have meaning.
  • Difference between a person who trust Allah and who doesn’t is that ability not to be perturbed.
  • If you don’t believe in God, you see the world as godless. If you believe in God, you see the world filled with signs of God.
  • Never think something is evil because you don’t know (unless it is shariah outlined, but if it is from God, you don’t know.)
  • Bismillah has bakarah and without saying it, the thing is cut off from barakah
  • Different benfits in tribulations to different people.
  • God his three things in three things:
    • Hid His contentment in His obedience: don’t know what Allah will accept from you.
    • Hid His wrath in disobedience: Don’t know what Allah will punish you for.
    • He hid His awliyah amongst His servants–can even be a NON MUSLIM. (I repeat, NON MUSLIM)
  • Tribulations can remove wrongs
    • Imam Al Ghazali said some wrongs can only be removed by depression
    • People get depressed by their souls–can’t remove the anguish in their souls so they try to numb it. (SO TRUE)
      • Existence is painful if you are not fulfilling yoru function. Like body parts.
      • Signs of pain is a gift so you know to get medicine or turn to Allah
        • Kufr is covering up, instead of turning to Allah
  • Tribulations can elevate rank
    • Prophets get it
    • Ibn Abbas:  No tribulation doesn’t have a tribulationthat is worse than it.
  • So sincere tauba to forgive sins–don’t ask to get them purified, ask for forgiveness.
  • What you see in this world is a metaphor for the unseen world. (Love the analogy)
  • People can have spiritual states with Allah when they cannot experience pain.
1. Realize the power of Lordship (Allah) over you
  • Allah is the Lord over you.
  • Remind you that there are things you cannot control
  • Illusion of reality is that we are independent and can do whatever we want
  • Calamities come and we are snapped of that illusion
  • Story of Musa (as) and Khidr is really the story that solves the problem of evil.
  • Difference between a believer and a non believer: believer knows life makes sense and wait until the Day of Judgment to have it explained. We trust Allah.
  • Pre-judge=prejudice. Can’t pre-judge God. We have a small amount of knowledge of Him
  • Someone asked Imam Al Ghazali where is God? He responded that if you don’t know the function of your body (or where you are in the universe) how can you know where God is?
  • Problem of people who are deluded is that they do not know that they are deluded.
2. Realize your servitude and your brokenness before the will and power of God.
3. Sincerity to Allah because one has no place of return in putting off or defending against the calamities, except Him. Makes you sincere when you call on Him.
  • So you can call on God without shirk.
  • Only source from calamity is Allah.
4. He returned to Allah and is suddenly fervent in desire of Allah
  • When calamities hits, person calls on Allah, returning back to Him.
5. That it leads to a humbled state before God and leads to prayers that you call on God.
  • Allah afflicts who He loves just so He can hear them call onto Him
  • Life is like getting your tooth pulled out or in that temporary moment of panic. Compare 80 years to infinity. It is practically nothing.
  • Relax the mind and be content in affliction
6. That you are forbearing toward the One who has afflicted you.
  • Forbearance in calamities is the best type of forbearance.
7. That you can actually forgive the one who has wronged you.
  • Allah loves who pardons others
  • Grudge makes it harder for forgiveness
  • Allah is with the patient one.
  • Bearnig something and being patient are two different things
  • Being patient brings Allah’s love.
8. To be patient during the tribulation
9. To actually happy of what is happening because of those benefits.
10. To be grateful for it.
  • Because of a sickness, you are grateful for the cure.
11. The purification that these calamities have towards peoples’ wrongs and their sins.
  • This is a lot better than what we really deserve.
12. The compassion that Allah enables you to show to people that care in tribulation and to help them.
  • If you don’t help people in their problems (being appropriate to help them) then Allah will give you their problems.
  • Two types of people: People of well being and tribulation
  • Those in well being should be grateful and those in tribulation, show compassion to them.
13. Tribulation gives you the blessing of having true knowledge of the extent of well being.
14. Allah has prepared from the blessing of the Akhirah, based on ranks. God rewards for calamities you bear patiently or with contentment.
  • Content vs. patient and tauba.
15. What is hidden inside the folds of these calamities are blessings.
  • That can be goodness/benefits in a problem
16. Tribulations prevent you from arrogance, pride, evil, tyranny, etc.
  • If you have problems, you won’t harm others.
17. Contentment.
  • Because tribulations hit both good and evil. Who ever doesn’t like it, it is by Allah.
  • Tribulations can take you to paradise.
  • Read history–there have been worse times.
  • Calamity of our age is spiritual calamity (lack of religion and spirituality)

Secrets of Allah's Mercy in forgiving sins though Sickness and Hardship

Secrets of Allah's Mercy in forgiving sins though Sickness and Hardship
Ya Saburu -O Patience one!-relief from troubles or confusion, to be read 3000 times !

A person's life goes through alternating periods of happiness and dismay, strength and weakness, wealth and poverty, health and sickness, etc. A true believer is one who maintains a clear level of Iman-faith throughout the worldly fluctuation. He continues to remember Allah and ascribe the bounties to Him; and he turns to Him in submission, asking for relief from his affliction.

This is described in a tradition "Indeed amazing are the affairs of a believer ! They are all for his benefit; If he is granted ease of living he is thankful; and this is best for him. And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres; and this is best for him."

"Certainly, We shall test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits; but give glad tidings to the patient - those who, when afflicted with calamity say, "Truly to Allah we belong, and truly to Him shall we return." it is those who will be awarded blessings and mercy from their Lord; and it is those who are the guided ones." [2:155-157]

Holy saying of Allah‘ Oh Son of Adam if you are patient and sacrificed for Allah's reward when you receive the first shock of an affliction I wouldn't accept less than Paradise for you as a reward for you.

So a believer needs to display patience and submission during sickness and hardships, hunger, or other afflictions. And shows gratitude and thankfulness for all the wonderful blessings that Allah grants him.

Prophet Ayoub (Job) told his wife when she asked him to ask Allah for a relief from his sickness, I'm shy from my God to ask him because I haven't spent in this difficult situation except a short time if compared to the time I was in good.
Hardships Benefit the Believer

Allah has decreed that, in this life, hardships and disasters strike both believers and non-believers. For a non-believer, they are inconveniences that hinder him from proceeding with his normal involvement in the worldly life.

For a believer, on the other hand, they are instances of rest and remembrance, tests that promise great rewards, and indications of atonement and expiation/pardoning of sins. Regardless of how little is the harm that strikes a believer, it carries with it good news of forgiveness and elevated rank in heaven. The righteous predecessors used to be pleased when a hardship afflicted them, seeing it as a token of Allah's forgiveness and benevolence.

Verily with every difficult situation there is a relief. 94:6

Reward of Sins and Sign of Allah's Love
Some traditions say ‘Hardships continue to befall a believing man and woman in their body, family, and property, until they meet Allah burdened with no sins.'

The amount of reward is in accordance with the amount of suffering. When Allah loves some people, He tries them with affliction. He who then is content with Allah's decree has achieved the acceptance of Allah, and he who is dissatisfied (with Allah's decree) will attain the anger of Allah. Whenever Allah wills good for a person, He subjects him to adversity.

Tradition “The parable of a believer is that of a fresh and moist plant; the wind tilts it this way and that way; and so is the believer; he continues to be subject to affliction. And the parable of a hypocrite is that of a firm cedar tree; it does not shake - until it is uprooted all at once."

Trials

Trial is not disliked in itself but the result of it is disliked. If one is patient and tolerant under trial then he succeeded in this trial. This is what's liked in Trials. Allah almighty knows all our characteristics before he put us under Trials but these tests are for people to test and take example from one another.

Now, as for man, when his Lord trials him, giving him honours and gifts, then he says, (puffed up), "My Lord has honoured me. "But when he trials him, restricting his subsistence for him, then he says (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 89:15-16

What are Allah's blessings

Blessing wouldn't be considered an honouring from Allah to His servant unless Allah gives him the ability to behave wisely in it. Allah's right in the blessing is for us to praise Him for it.

Affliction are by Ranks of Righteousness

The prophets and righteous people are afflicted the most, and their rewards are the highest.

Tradition "The most in their suffering among the people are the prophets, then the best, then the (next) best, one is afflicted in accordance with his Deen- religion . If his deen- religion is firm his affliction is hard, and if his deen- religion is weak, his affliction is light. Indeed, one would be so much subjected to adversity until he walks among the people without any sins."

Tradition "When Allah wills good for a servant of His, He speeds up his punishment in this life; and when He wills retribution for a servant of His, He holds his sins for Him to judge him by them on the Day of Resurrection."

Rewards for Sickness

One should not look to sickness as a gloomy episode, but should remember the great good in it. It is one form of affliction with which Allah tests His servants, giving them a chance to acquire rewards.

Removal of Sins and Elevation in Ranks

Tradition "Whenever a Muslim is afflicted by harm from sickness or other matters, Allah will drop his sins because of that, like a tree drops its leaves."

Tradition "Expect good because Allah makes a believers sickness amends (for his sins) and a period of rest. However, when a disbeliever falls sick, he is like a camel whose owner ties it then lets it loose - it does not understand why it was tied nor why it was freed."

once some pain afflicted the Prophet (peace be upon him) causing him to suffer and turn about in his bed. His blessed wife said: "Had one of us done this, you would have blamed him." He peace be upon him replied:

"An ailment is intensified for the righteous. whenever a believer is afflicted by a hardship, either it is a thorn or more, a sin is taken off from him because of it, and he is elevated by one rank in heaven )."

Retaining Rewards for Deeds Before Sickness

Usually, when a believer falls sick, he would not be able to do the same amount of good (prayer, fasting, helping Muslims, etc) that he used to do when he was well. But Allah out of His great mercy, continues to record for him the good deeds that he was forced to stop because of his sickness.

Tradition "For a travelling or sick person, his deeds will be recorded in accordance with what he used to do when he was resident or well."

Tradition "No (believing) person gets sick, but (his deeds) will be recorded for him in accordance with what he used to do when he was well."

Tradition "No Muslims body is afflicted by Allah, but He will record (his deeds) for him in accordance with what he used to do when he was well - as long as he is sick. Thus, if He takes his life, He forgives him; and if He cures him, He washes him (from sins)."

Tradition "Each days deeds are sealed with it. thus, when a believer gets sick, the angels say, "Our lord! Your servant such and such, You have restrained him (from doing good this day)."And the lord replies, "Seal his day in accordance with his (usual) deeds, until he is cured or dies".

Tradition ‘whatever harms a believer even if it was a thorn or more, Allah would elevate the believer with this difficulty a degree higher or might forgive one of the sins he made.'

One needs to be patient and submits to Allah's will, if they want to be rewarded for both the submission and the sickness, otherwise, he would not be rewarded at all; because he resented Allah's decree. The traditions are clear in that the rewards are recorded once affliction strikes a Muslim. as for patience and acceptance, they are virtues for which a person may get additional rewards over those for the affliction.

Two Kinds of trials

Trial that servants have no hand in them and Trial that the servants have hands in them.

We have tried them with both prosperity and adversity: in order that they might turn (to Us). 7:168

Who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return" 2:156

The reasons that lead for being tolerant when hardships happen:

1. To believe it is from Allah and people have nothing to do with it.

Now await in patience the Command of they Lord: for verily the art in Our eyes: and celebrate the praises of they Lord the while thou stands forth. 52:48

2. To lean on Allah and return things to Him.

And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And if anyone puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him. For Allah will surely accomplish His purpose: verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion. 56:3

Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. To Us must ye return. 21:35

3. To know that Allah chose you for this test.

Those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure!" ‘For Allah is with those who are patient.'

4. Allah's knowledge of your conditions.

5. To know that it's given from Allah.

6. Allah after testing you with hardships would ease them on you because you would return to Him with prayers and asking.

Tradition ‘If some body faced difficulties in life let him say - we are for Allah and to him we will return. In you I content myself in this difficulty, oh Allah give me refuge from it and replace me better than it.'

7. Patience inherit satisfaction.

8. To feel closeness to Allah at times of hardship.

‘Or, who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and who relieves its suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that ye heed! 27:62

9. To know that you have gained good rewards for this patience.

10. To know that comfort and ease come along with hardships and difficulties.

‘Verily with every difficult situation there is a relief. 94:6
If a servant understands these matters then he would be the most patient. And one of Allah's 99 names is As-Sabur O Patience.

Ya Saburu -O Patience one!-relief from troubles or confusion, to be read 3000 times !

And be patient in hardship:
for, verily, God is with those who are patient in hardship.
Al-Anfal 8:46

I f you are completely perplexed and in straits,
have patience, for patience is the key to joy.
Rumi, Mathnawi

Sufic commentary of as-Sabûr From The Most Beautiful Names of Allah meaning
The Patiently- Enduring, The Most Restrained,  The Long-Suffering –which is nothing

The One who is most patient, steadfast, and enduring. The One who is not moved by haste to carry out any action before it's proper time.

The One who patiently endures and does everything in its proper time and proper manner, no matter how long that may take.

The One who patiently accomplishes each thing in its proper time, in the way it needs to be and according to what it requires.

From the root s -b-r which has the following classical Arabic connotations:
to be patient, to be enduring
to endure trial or affliction with good manner
to be contented in trial or affliction without show of complaint
to make no distinction between comfort and affliction
to bear calmly, to persevere cheerfully
to be steadfast, constant
to restrain, confine, restrain, withhold from something

Mankind's share of this attribute is the bountiful reward bestowed upon those who patiently persevere in overcoming the trials, lusts and errors of this world.

Sheikh Tosun Bayrak writes of al-Sabûr:

The meaning of Islam is submission; to forego one's appetites, desires and will in the favor of the will of Allâh. To be able to submit, one has to be patient. In Islam, patience is a sign of faith...

Related names:

Halîm is the patience that arises from a sense of deep serenity, lenience, calm deliberation.

Sabûr is the patience that arises by self-restraint, enduring something without complaint.

Indeed, an ignorant man who is generous is dearer to Allah than a worshipper who is miserly."(Tirmidhi)

Dua-Turning misfortunes into blessings

How to see a problem and turn into a blessing
This shows how to look at problems with positive attitude.

"If a servant of Allah is afflicted with a misfortune and says:

‘Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, Allahumma ajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairan minha‘

(Verily we belong to Allah and truly to Him shall we return. O Allah! Protect me in this calamity that has befallen me and replace it with something better),

Allah will accept his prayer, grant him reward for his affliction, and replace it with something better.”

As for the 4th that being Sabr, what is mentioned about hardship, problems  loss, difficulties  is  to discourage from complaining about ones Hardship as there we should look at them all in a positive attitude two many reasons, we should our
tribulations/problems "turn them on their heads" and realise that there are many benefits in tribulations. For within hardships are hidden divine Gifts as;

The Purifications of Sins.
The Illumination of the hearts.
The Refining of character & maturating if virtue.
For the refined ones, Spiritual openings & constant rise in degree.

(see below the 17 benefits of tribulations link by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf)

Theses can only be obtain with Sabr and trusting in Allah and saying the above dua and being positive and changing ones attitude into trust and know that Part of Qadr-
Divine decree has be written that way so who are we to really complain and if we want to complain, make Duas to Allah for his Mercy, Love Wisdom and compassion.
That Qadr-Divine decree is (..qadri khairihi wa sharrihi-..My fate the Good and the bad..) as Iman-faith is only tested and then increased with Trials and hardships and those, those who complain are only fighting against their Divine Decree, so with patience will hearts be at peace and only then are given Increase in Iman.

Iman consists of belief in the following seven articles: also known as Iman Mufasal: aamantu billahi wa malaikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi wal yawmul akhirihi wal qadri khairihi wa sharrihi minallahi ta’ala wal ba’sihi ba’adal mawt.

I believe in Allah; and His Angels; and His Books; and His Messengers; and the Day of Judgment; and that of Fate, the good and the bad given by Allah; and the Life after Death
.

So really its part of Iman to be tested some are us tested more then others why, there is a Wisdom in that Only Allah knows but are must Submit-Islam to that.

Lets look at an example of one major test our beloved
Prophet (peace be upon him) was given and then see the hidden Divine Gifts bestowed on him,(peace be upon him. The Mi’raj was a Divine Gift to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the 'Year of Sorrow'. When both is most beloved Wife and uncle  passed away this happened in 619 A.D. the year which became known as the 'Year of Sorrow'.

The years of hardship had made Khadijah very weak. She became ill and soon afterwards she died. Thus, the Prophet (peace be upon him) lost his beloved wife and friend, the first person to accept Islam and support him. She had been a refuge from all his troubles and, through her good-heartedness, the best company in his suffering. He had loved her very much.

Soon after this, the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) uncle and protector, Abu Talib, also died. Abu Talib had been one of the most respected men in Mecca-one of the elders of Quraysh, he had protected the Prophet (peace be upon him) against his enemies. Not only was this a sad occasion for the Prophet (peace be upon him) but also a dangerous one. According to Arab custom anyone who is under the protection of another is safe so long as his protector lives. Now, with the death of his uncle, the Prophet's protection was gone.

The Prophet's (peace be upon him) enemies rejoiced to see him so sad, without a wife to console and comfort him, and without his uncle to protect him. They began to treat him worse than ever before. But Allah bless his Sabr and Halim with the Mi’raj and the gifts and blessings and power of the the Mi’raj.
